GES declares Dec 7 day off for basic schools

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has declared December 7 a day off for all basic schools across the country in lieu of the elections being held on that day.

The move is to allow teachers and students who might be involved in the official electoral process to be able to do so without the fear of missing out on academic roles.

They describe the action as unfair as some teachers would have official roles to play during the election period. Responding to concerns on Citi FM, the Public Relations of GES, Rev Jonathan Bettey said that GES had to reconsider its action due to many arguments raised.

It has become very necessary for the management of the Ghana Education Service to declare Wednesday, 7th December, which is the Election Day, a day off for all teachers and students in our schools across the country to enable them exercise their franchise and also make the environment serene for the exercise to be carried out,” he said.

He assured that this new directive would not affect the current academic calendar of the schools, and urged all teachers and students to report to schools on Thursday, December 8.
